Whole School Positive Behaviour Support

Learning Environment

Atwell Primary Independent Public School believes a positive school environment is an integral part to building and maintaining appropriate and productive behaviour standards. We aim to create an environment where students, staff and families have a sense of belonging and they feel supported and cared for by the school staff. Our focus will be to encourage the development of self-disciplined students who are able to positively interact in the learning opportunities offered at our school.

There are various initiatives that support the development of a positive learning environment across Atwell Primary Independent Public School.

They include:

  • A clear vision statement and school ethos

  • Guiding behaviour principles and school and classroom expectations

  • Health and Wellbeing focus through the initiatives such as Act, Belong, Committ and KidsMatter as well as the teaching and learning programs aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum

  • Opportunities for leadership roles in Year 6

  • School assemblies and whole school events

  • After School Enrichment Program (ASEP)

  • Targeted behaviour and self-esteem plans as required

Code of Conduct

We build a culture that promotes a safe and caring environment for students, staff, parents and community members. Students will be taught to become respectful and independent learners.

In order to achieve this we:

  • Have established a set of rules and expectations that guide all individuals

  • Have developed a Positive Student Behaviour Policy that outlines the their responsibilities to encourage them to recognise and respect the rights of others. This can be located on the website www.atwellps.wa.edu.au

  • Encourage and support students to make positive, non-violent resolutions to conflicts.

  • Deliver teaching programs to explicitly teach and develop resiliency skills.

At Atwell Primary Independent Public School we have established a set of rules that are explained to students on a number of occasions throughout the course of the school year. These rules are reflected in the class rules that each teacher establishes with their students at the beginning of each year.

Positive Incentives:

There are a variety of positive incentives for responsible behaviour, both in the playground and in the classroom. These include faction slips, merit awards, recognition of work and behaviour, stickers and stamps and whole class awards.

Consequences:

Where possible, immediate and logical consequences are administered for misbehaviour. Teachers keep a record of all playground and classroom misbehaviour and develop plans to help individual children. Consequences include loss of privilege, isolation in class, isolation in buddy class, detention (in normal break), isolation from class and suspension.

Teachers or the administration notify parents/caregivers when a child’s behaviour is of concern or a severe breach of rules occurs.
