Current research continues to show that traditional homework in primary school offers little to no academic benefit, especially for younger students.
Studies by Professor John Hattie indicate that homework in the primary years has “around zero” effect on academic achievement. Research by Harris Cooper and others reinforces this and highlights the stress excessive homework can cause for families.
However, evidence strongly supports:
Daily reading at home
Short, purposeful reinforcement tasks
Optional, engaging home learning linked to class experiences
Our Approach at Atwell PS
Homework is optional. Teachers are not required to set, collect, mark, or provide feedback on homework.
Reading at home is strongly encouraged, and students have full access to our school library. Reading questions are available in the Atwell PS Connect library.
Optional Homework Grids can also be found in the Connect library.
Upper school consolidation tasks may be offered via Google Classroom; these are optional and not assessed.
